

In the winter, it becomes a destination for ice climbers. Best Time to Visit Flume Gorge is open to the public from mid-May through mid-October. It's about an hour north of Concord, just off I-93 at Exit 34A. The same storm deepened the gorge and formed Avalanche Falls. While in the Gorge you are on elevated wooden pathways that go back and forth over Flume Brook. Flume Gorge is located within Franconia Notch State Park at 852 Daniel Webster Highway in Lincoln, New Hampshire.

A heavy rainstorm in June of 1883 started a landslide that swept the boulder from its place. The rock was 10 feet (3m) high and 12 feet (3.6m) long. The stunning Conway Granite walls that rise up to 90 feet, are the highlights of the trek, through the gorge, the stairs, uphill trails, loop trails and boardwalks. At that time, a huge egg-shaped boulder hung suspended between the walls. Running along the base of Mount Liberty in the Franconia Notch State Park, the Flume Gorge extends around 800 feet and is cut by the Flume Brook. She had trouble convincing her family of the marvelous discovery, but eventually persuaded others to come and see for themselves. The Flume was discovered in 1808 by 93-year-old “Aunt” Jess Guernsey when she accidently came upon it while fishing. Technically, the Gorge is closed during the winter and there are no shuttle buses from the entrance to where. During the summer, the Flume is a highly frequented tourist destination and is usually crowded with groups of kids and families.
